What are Kettlebells?

Kettlebells have been around for more than a century, but have only recently started becoming popular in the United States.

Imagine a cast iron ball about the size of a cannon ball, with a thick iron handle attached to it, then that is about what it looks like. Kettlebells come in different sizes and weights. You can use kettlebell training on its own as a complete fitness workout or you can incorporate some kettlebell exercises into your current routine.

I have been working out all my life and have tried many different methods of training. Doing Weights, Yoga, Pilates, Cardio, Dance, Combat Conditioning – you name it. I have tried them all. So when I first heard about kettlebells I was rather skeptical. I mean - it’s just another weight, isn’t it? Why bother with kettlebells if I already have dumbbells - right?

Wrong! It is true that many of the kettlebell exercises can be performed with a dumbbell, but you will not get anywhere near the same effect. This is because the weight distribution of a kettlebell and how it is used is unique. It provides a different and more effective kind of torque, as it whirls around your wrist and grip while you're pulling, pushing, swinging, and stopping its movement.

Kettlebells develop your strength and coordination for peak performance and functional strength while dramatically challenging and improving your cardio vascular ability. A UFC fighter that runs out of gas in any one of these aspects is finished. That's why they train with kettlebells - it's the closest thing to the extreme physical demands they'll experience in the cage.

OK, this doesn’t mean you’ll be training to become a UFC fighter and I realize it may sound intimidating – if not outright dangerous! But hey! It's not. The beauty of kettlebell training is that you can do it at your own pace. You decide how far you want to take it.

Lots of people think of strength training and cardiovascular training as two separate entities and that's the way they usually approach training. With kettlebell training, you're actually doing both at the same time, thus doing both in half the time it would normally take you. Actually, I've seen many weightlifters and martial artists ready to drop after about ten minutes at their game. That shows that their training methods do not address the issue of the body working with maximum strength and cardiovascular output at the same time.

That is also what's going to help you burn fat faster than anything else while building muscle strength.

At first, Kettlebells seemed a little intimidating to me, but after having picked one up and tried it, I was amazed at how much fun it was. Best of all, I could really feel all the muscles of my body working. Plus it was an extremely empowering feeling - being able to lift that much weight safely and with much less effort than I’ve been used to.

I've watched many a woman go from being a little apprehensive and timid, to almost immediately increasing their kettlebell weight - because it brought them so much immediate gratification, confidence and fast results. Kettlebells give you real functional strength - Fast!

It is a sports enhancement tool like no other!

Unlike regular strength training equipment or methods in the gym, kettlebells give you total functional strength. It can do this because it requires full body movement, which is much more applicable to every day actions and movements than most other types of sport.

Many traditional exercises and movements mostly isolate different muscle groups. They work the body in bits and pieces - so to speak.  Training with kettlebells, on the other hand, teaches you absolute functional motion and "elastic strength", which causes your limbs to be strong in any angle.

For example: I travel a lot, getting on and off ships and planes frequently. It used to be a real struggle for me to get my hand luggage (usually packed with books, my computer, some external hard drives and other quite heavy items) into the overhead compartments of the airplanes. Like a lot of women, I used to have to ask for someone’s help. Well, since I started kettlebell training it is a breeze for me. This is not only because I feel (and am) stronger, but I have learned how to master efficiency of motion and how to use my legs as leverage to gather momentum. These things translate into greater upper body strength. So now, getting that suitcase into the overhead compartment on the plane is easy.

Put in a nutshell, your whole life gets enhanced because all your everyday activities feel so much more effortless. Things like carrying groceries, picking up and carrying your kids, moving furniture, getting that box of books off the top shelf of the storage cabinet… or whatever strenuous and physical tasks you do regularly during the day. Everything will be easier and you will be able to do it all the more safely, with much less risk of injuring yourself.
